The 12,000 square foot putting green stands out amongst the rest of the short game facilities and proves that Zion Hills Golf County means business. Being one of the few courses with top quality bent grass greens, keeping them in shape is usually the biggest challenge. Zion Hills Golf County has risen to this challenge and does a great job of it. There is never a compromise on the maintenance of the facility. Even a small detail like the quality of range balls used is taken care of.

Intra Academy Competition

The essence of a good player is his/her ability to manage the game under competitive stress. Students at TSG are encouraged to compete against each other through regular intra-academy competition. This helps the students understand their current skill level and also lets them learn through a post round self-evaluation that we call error detection. Students are also taken to Golf courses outside of Zion Hills to give them some experience on unfamiliar terrain.

Student Development

The academy strives to create atleast one new experience outside golf for the students each month – time and schedule permitting. 2018 is our first year of doing this. We have successfully conducted a visit to the Volvo bus factory in Bangalore. With fantastic grass tees and bent grass greens, this is truly a budding golfers paradise. For a coach who wants to produce high quality golfers, being backed by such a facility makes a world of difference.

The 9 hole golf course with its large bent grass greens provides the players with a fair amount of challenges especially when the wind is up. The players can test their skills and all-round game on the course which has been set up beautifully by Ronald Freem, who is one of the top golf course designers in the world today. With long and short term stay options players can come in for various training programs and not have to worry about their living arrangements. There is no greater luxury for a budding golfer to be able to walk to the driving range every day.

For any student who is coach dependent, the success rate will naturally be very low and progress very slow because the student requires to build confidence in his/her own ability to process information and do the work given, to analyze progress as per the path laid down.

At TSG every student has a 52 week plan for coaching integrated with sports science and every month a one-on-one meeting with the Director of Instruction, Tarun, the practice plans are studied, modified as required based on recent competition performance and on-course sessions with Tarun, and then goals are set for the next 4 weeks. These plans are taken into every practice sessions and students are encouraged to reach out to the coaching team at any given time since every member is on campus.

Every Saturday, and for a couple of hours on weekdays day, every student has access to the computer lab to input the data required by the coaching team to understand just how aware the student is of the drills he is following. The students are trained on how to give this feedback about their game. There are monthly assessment tests for the short and long game too.

The team experts on nutrition, club fitting, sports science and psychology also conduct player meetings. These sessions are aimed at arming the students with good knowledge and information about what it takes to keep the mind, body, and the equipment they use, in shape – how to recognize when something is not on the mark, to create awareness about their thoughts and how to control them both on and off the golf course, to give them tools that equip them to deal with contingencies like dehydration, loading up on the right foods in the weeks prior to back-to-back tournaments, what to eat during the round and after, dealing with negative thoughts, fear and anxiety etc., training them to recognize changes that they are going through, whether deliberate or otherwise.

Academics

The learning center at TSG is in partnership with PROSE, a young company started in 2017, by a set of people passionate about bringing a structured education delivery model to sports persons where the latter need not compromise on their training. They have tied up with Excel Soft Technologies, the parent company of Excel School Solutions (ESS), a provider of innovative technology-based solutions in the education and training space.

The first learning center was set-up at the TSG academy. At TSG the program is designed for young aspiring sportspersons in the age group of 10 to 18 years offering CBSE between 5th-8th grade and NIOS from 9th-12th grade. Here the model is designed to have subject matter experts deliver classes form an exclusive studio in Mysore and on-ground support staff/teachers at the academy for day-to-day supervision of study hours and student progress At TSG a student does academics for 3 hours per day, for 5 days a week; they average 100 study hours a year (as opposed to conventional schooling that requires 6 hours a day and 180 hours in a year).

Given that every student has different tournament travel schedules it is imperative to monitor their attendance and learning process very closely. Students can ask for individual sessions to make-up classes, or even ask for a different teacher if they haven’t understood a concept explained by a particular faculty member. Apart from this, their classes are video recorded for them to go back to whenever they need. Not only when they travel but also during the self-study hour daily the students are given worksheets, which they need to complete. The entire syllabus has been digitized and put on the cloud for students to be able to access it wherever they are – they can make notes on the e-textbook itself and the teachers in Mysore and on campus can respond as required.

TSG, PROSE and Excel School Solutions are committed to provide solutions based on the student’s requirements so that it is in their best interest to give their board exams to the best of their abilities, without compromising on their sports training.

Currently the subjects offered in grades 9-10 are English, Business Studies, Social Studies, Economics and Maths, and, in grades 11-12 are English, Business Studies, Mass communication, Economics and Psychology. The NIOS requirement for these grades is only 5 subjects, and we have chosen not to offer any science subjects. For NIOS the only exams that a student needs to give are the Board exams in grade 10 and 12. However, at TSG the students do monthly unit test and quarterly exams.

From grades 5-8 on the other hand the students are mandated to do all subjects (8 in total) as per the CBSE syllabus and have an annual exam schedule as per CBSE requirements.

Student Development

The academy strives to create atleast one new experience outside golf for the students each month – time and schedule permitting. 2018 is our first year of doing this. We have successfully conducted a visit to the Volvo bus factory in Bangalore. Along with a shop floor walk, there was an interactive session between Volvo’s senior management and our students on Performance, Excellence and Competition: Drawing parallels between the Automotive Industry and Sport/Golf.

We also successfully completed our first Table Tennis group championship event with the final round requiring players to compete with their non-dominant hand. The intent here was to build camaraderie and the given the format it was fun all the way. Some of the other activities planned are star gazing with an astronomy expert, understanding the basics of forensics, a visit to Discovery Village to play adventure sport, Salsa workshops with Lourd Vijay’s dance studio and workshops by a group therapist on Competition and Community: What it means to live with the same people you compete with. We welcome ideas and people who want to share their expertise with the students to help them widen their sphere of thought.
